Do you love cooking but want to improve your skills even more? By the end of this class, you’ll have more confidence in the kitchen and 4 recipes to impress your friends and family from all around the world including Mexico, England, Japan and Italy.
-Week 1: Mexico: Introduction to the class, knife skills, kitchen safety. Recipe: Guacamole.
-Week 2: England: Tea party with cucumber sandwiches, knife skills and garnishes. Recipe: Tea and cucumber sandwiches.
-Week 3: Japan: Sushi culture and how to make it. Recipe: vegetable or cooked shrimp/salmon sushi with spicy mayo.
-Week 4: Italy: Pasta history & culture, how to cook pasta, & how to make Alfredo sauce. Recipe: Fettuccine Alfredo
*Students can actively participate with the class as we prepare together or observe, take notes and make the recipe with their parent later and send a photo. This is based on what the parent agrees to based on skill level & supervision available to the student at home during the class.
-Tools needed: Parents can also decide between which knife they are comfortable with their student using (plastic serrated-similar to this link or a small steak knife or serrated knife-similar to this link. A cutting glove like this link can be helpful if using metal knives but is not required. A cutting board. Measuring cups and spoons. 1 medium mixing bowl. 1 sauce pan with a lid. 1 large pot for boiling pasta. 1 zester, microplane or box grater. 1 Pasta strainer or colander. 1 fine mesh strainer. 1 bamboo sushi mat, lined with plastic wrap. 1 microwave safe mug. 1 large cooking spoon for stirring. 1 potato masher for guacamole (or substitute forks). We will also need a sharp, flat edge (non serrated) chef’s knife for sushi and the cucumber sandwiches to get a clean cut.
-Ingredients needed:
Week 1:Tortilla chips, 2 ripe avocados, 1 large tomato, 2 limes, salt, 1 small sweet yellow onion, fresh cilantro (optional).
Week 2: Sliced white sandwich bread, small container whipped cream cheese, salt, 1 lemon, fresh dill, 1 English seedless cucumber, 1 bag of tea(any), sugar, milk for tea.
Week 3: uncooked sushi rice, Seasoned Rice Vinegar (like Marukan brand- or plain rice vinegar), sushi nori seaweed sheets, mayonnaise, sriracha sauce, soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi (optional), English seedless cucumber, avocado, cooked shrimp or salmon (optional), eel sauce/sweet sushi sauce (optional-available at the sushi counter of Publix, most grocery stores with sushi).
Week 4: 1 lb. Box of uncooked dry fettuccine (we will use half of the box). 1/2 stick unsalted butter, salt and pepper, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese (you can grate this yourself or buy pre-grated in the refrigerated cheese section).
