Learning about nutrition? Well we will link food science to the material world!

From ice cream to French fries, sugar to hot dogs, the food we eat every day can be a fascinating topic. The best bit is that you can incorporate science inquiry into everyday activities and as such there are plenty of project ideas you can use to help bring food science into the classroom! So with this in mind, here’s a list of ideas that we will look into: 

  • Week 1- Create honeycomb and learn about the effect of heat on bicarbonate soda
    Supplies: 
    Honey
    Water
    Sugar
    Baking soda
    Butter or oil.
    Baking Tray
    Saucepan
    Whisk
    Spoons
    Cup
    Stove and oven
    Adult help.
  • Week 2- Grow salt crystals
    Supplies: 
    Adult help
    Three cups of table salt.
    1L of water
    One Pencil
    1 Paperclip
    A piece of string, cut to size.
    One strong plastic or Pyrex jar.

  • Week 3- Grow rock candy sugar crystals
    Supplies: 
    Adult Help
    300g Of Sugar
    Saucepan or kettle with 500mL of water
    Wooden kebab stick or chopstick
    2 Clothes pegs
    A glass
    A metal spoon
    A place to leave the experiment setup away from ants
    Optional: food coloring

  • Week 4- Make your own ice cream and learn about crystal formation over time
    Supplies: 
    Half a cup of milk.
    Half a cup of cream.
    Chocolate or strawberry topping.
    A medium strong plastic freezer bags
    2 Zip-loc bags.
    Half a cup of salt
    Crushed ice and a hand towel
    A mixing bowl
    A spoon
